Dearborn Academy is one of New England's leading 766 Approved, therapeutic day schools. We enroll students in grades 3-12 who typically have average or above average academic potential along with specific learning disabilities and/or mild to moderate emotional challenges. We offer a rich academic program, diversified support systems, and our explicit instructional style, which includes the use of visual mnemonics, graphic organizers, templates and modified instructional language. This supportive environment allows students who have been unsuccessful in previous school settings to achieve substantial gains.

Available Positions

Physical Education Teacher, F-T
Start date: August 23, 2019

The successful candidate for this challenging and rewarding position will have the following qualities, abilities and beliefs:

  • Demonstrated compassion and kindness towards students, families and staff
  • A sense of humor
  • Belief that students who demonstrate unexpected behaviors have gaps in their skills
  • Proven ability to form relationships with families in order to work as a member of an integrated student support team
  • Belief that suspension is a last resort and interest or experience with restorative justice practices
  • Ability to serve as a role model for staff and students

Plan for and lead phys ed classes according to the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks

  • Plan for and lead recess for students in grades 3-8
  • Plan and teach health classes according to the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks
  • Provide guidance to team members so that all adults are engaged and supporting students in class
  • Act as Head Coach for the Bobcats, Dearborn’s competitive basketball team
  • Provide support to students within the school as needed


  • Three years of working with students with special needs preferred
  • Certification in Massachusetts as Phys Ed Teacher preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree/graduate studies preferred
  • Ability to multi-task and work with a variety of staff and students
